This workshop will introduce participants to the Italian birthday cake, through oral history and traditional cake decorating methods.

We invite participants to listen to the stories and memories of this dessert, while trying their hand at decorating their own cake slice. Cassandra will present the oral history component; while Erica–a pastry chef with a decade of cake decorating experience–will teach participants how to decorate.

The JOYLab is hosting PhD Eluza Gomes (UQAM) for a three month internship where we explore arts-based research methods. This biweekly & bilingual (FR/EN) co-learning space will be a place for experimentation, critical practice, and thinking about how we engage in researching big questions through arts-based practices. We will have snacks & beverages & all art materials will be provided by the JOYLab. The workshops are free, masked & open to all! Hybrid too if folks are interested in joining from afar.

We will meet in the JOYLab (FG 5.255) to experiment with arts-based methods.

Facilitated by Anna Sheftel and Stacey Zembrzycki, as well as a rotating group of Concordia graduate students, Cassandra Marsillo, Kay Ponthieux Stern, and Kelann Currie-Williams, who are also Kitchen Table Collective Members.

 Creating open, safe, generative, and generous spaces to tell interview stories is vital to thinking through the varied challenges that oral historians face in the field. These monthly listening circles, led by an intergenerational group of practitioners, will enable COHDS community members to build relationships while they share the issues that keep them awake at night. Talking through what is said or unsaid, the stories that have a beginning but no end, the tangents that lead to possibilities or dead ends, and the interpersonal dynamics that make collaboration possible or problematic are all part of a debriefing process that holds great potential for pushing the field forward. This is work that should not be done alone. All interview stories welcome!

Panel discussion, following the matinee performance of "Mickey and Joe" on Saturday May 24th. I'll be joining Italian studies professor Dr. Cristina Carnemolla and playwright Michaela Di Cesare in a discussion moderated by the CBC’s Sabrina Marandola. This will be an excellent opportunity to unpack the dense historical backdrop of the piece and its continued relevance today.

Ticket holders for any performance in the run will be welcome to attend the panel after the show.

A panel discussion between Professor Dario Brancato and Jordan Black, moderated by Cassandra Marsillo. A vije du Molise, meaning “the road to Molise,” comes from a poem by Giose Rimanelli. In this panel, Brancato and Black will discuss the place of dialects in Italy from a linguistic and historical point of view, with a special focus on the context of Molise and the use of dialect in literary works. Presented by the Federazione delle associazioni molisane del Québec and the Istituto italiano di cultura.
