Guest Post: Miss Jessica

Updated: May 9, 2018

Our October guest post is by my good friend Miss Jessica. Elementary school teacher and all-round hilarious and lively person, Miss Jessica - like many of us - has been back to school for the last month or so. But, she's on the other side of the desk this year. Today, she's sharing her opinion on technology in the classroom:

It’s no secret that we are in a “milieu” of technological growth! As an elementary school teacher, I experience the love children have for technology on a daily basis. For example, many typical casual conversations start like this:

“Hey I loved the text you sent me!”

“Did you see my new Instagram post?”

“Did you see that vine-video of the cat playing the piano?”

When I hear these “conversation starters,” I cannot help but think that children and adults are talking about the same things.

Positively, with the rise of technology, we have the ability to access iPads, and in some elementary schools, we have access to SmartBoards.

SmartBoards have forever changed the way we teach. What is a SmartBoard? I would describe a it as a HUGE iPad, which allows us to write, read, and play videos. Don’t believe me? Watch this:

Although opinions may vary, I prefer using a SmartBoard rather than a traditional chalkboard. Since our future generations are constantly using technology, it is important for us to cater to their needs, by integrating technology within their classrooms.

I'm curious to know what you all think. Traditional chalkboard or technological SmartBoard?
